Turo can be profitable if run like a business and not a hobby. Meaning, your car needs to be available most (if not all month) and you will need to identify many ways to keep costs down. It is not a high margin business model, so generating as much rental income and keeping expenses low are a must.

After I returned the car, the host reported damages to his car, and then suddenly I was informed that I would have to pay for another $1200 - just for a windshield crack. It turns out that Turo do not actually pay for anything when any damages occur during rental time. Whatever the host claims, Turo was deducting that amount off of my credit card.

Having a platform that takes a percentage out scales so much better than worrying about real-estate cost, cleaning etc. It's the same thing with Turo, they want a cut out of everything because it scales really well. How was your Turo experience? I have a few questions.
The only reason I wasn't on the hook for the damage is because Turo has a limit on how long after a rental an owner can submit a damage claim and he was beyond it. If not for that it would've been my word vs. his heavily in his favor because I didn't take pictures of every panel on the car with a paint inspection light when I picked it up.

Personally I hate dealing with rental car companies. I'd rather give my business to Turo hosts. You see horror stories and worst case scenarios here in this sub but the vast majority of of Turo rentals are problem free.
